There is no better way to succeed in biology than to learn how to study. Studying for biology exams can seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. If you follow a few simple steps, studying for biology will be less stressful and more enjoyable.
One key to succeeding in biology is having good note taking skills. It is not enough to just come to class and listen to the teacher. You must be able to take accurate, detailed notes in order to perform well on exams.
In fact, most teacher use their biology notes to come up with at least half, if not more, of their biology exam questions. Below are some good biology note taking tips that are sure to help you learn how to take biology notes.
1.Follow the Guidelines
Study these guidelines before class so you will be familiar with the material. Read any assigned materials before class as well. If you know what is going to be discussed beforehand, you will be better prepared to take notes.
2. Get the Main Points
An important key for success in biology note taking is the ability to focus on and write down the main points. Don't try to write down everything your teacher says word for word. It's also a good idea to copy down anything the instructor writes on the whiteboard or LCD screen. This includes drawings, diagrams, or examples.
3. Record the Lesson
Many students find it difficult to take good biology notes because some teachers present information very quickly. In this case, ask the teacher for permission to record the lesson. Most teachers don't mind, but in case your teacher says no, you will have to practice taking notes quickly. Ask a friend to read an article quickly while you take notes. Review your notes to see if they are accurate and detailed.
4.Leave Some Space
When taking notes, be sure that you have enough space so that you can decipher what you have written. There is nothing more frustrating than having a page full of cramped, illegible notes. You will also want to be sure that you leave extra space in case you need to add more information later.
5.Textbook Highlighting
Many students find it useful to highlight information in textbooks. When highlighting, be sure to only highlight specific phrases or keywords. If you highlight every sentence, it will be difficult for you to identify the specific points that you need to focus on.
6.Ensure Accuracy
An effective way to ensure that the notes you have taken are accurate is to compare them with the information in your biology text. In addition, speak with the teacher directly and ask for feedback on your notes. Comparing notes with a classmate can also help you to capture information you may have missed.
7. Reorganize Your Notes
Reorganizing your notes serves two purposes. It allows you to rewrite your notes in a format that helps you understand them more clearly, and it helps you to review the material you have written.
8.Review Your Notes
Once you have reorganized your biology notes, be sure to review them before the end of the day. Be certain that you know the main points and write a summary of the information.

Bio-Study Tip 1
Always read the lecture material before the classroom lecture. I know, I know--you don't have time, but believe me, it makes an immense difference.

Bio-Study Tip 2

Biology, like most sciences, is hands-on. Most of us learn best when we are actively participating in a "topic." So make sure to pay attention in lab sessions and actually perform the experiments. Remember, you won't be graded on your lab partner's ability to perform an experiment, but your own.

Bio-Study Tip 3

Sit in the front of the class. Simple, yet effective. College students, pay close attention. You'll need recommendations one day, so make sure your professor knows you by name and you aren't 1 face in 400.

Bio-Study Tip 4

Compare biology notes with a friend. Since much of biology tends to be abstract, have a "note buddy." Each day after class compare notes with your buddy and fill in any gaps. Two heads are better than one!

Bio-Study Tip 5

Use the "lull" period between classes to immediately review the biology notes you have just taken.

Bio-Study Tip 6

Don't cram! As a rule, you should start studying biology notes a minimum of two weeks prior to the exam.

Bio-Study Tip 7

This tip is very important -- stay awake in class. I've observed too many people snoozing (even snoring!) in the middle of class.  Osmosis may work for water absorption, but it won't work when it comes time for biology exams.

Bio-Study Tip 8

Find some useful resources to help you when you study after class.
